Our Maltese that are ready to deliver their puppies are put in an oversized pen lined with papers for delivery. Papers are changed constantly to keep puppies and mommies clean as possible. We also put a heating pad under the kennel and cover the kennel with a blanket to keep our Maltese puppies very warm. These pens are kept in the nursery, my bed room. I like to have all new mommies here with their puppies so I can keep them close to me at all times during the night and also away from parts of the house that have lots of things going on. I still have a child at home that is 16 who likes to have his friends come visit. Keeping moms calm with their newborns is very important.

Mommies stay in the pen on the left with their puppies until the puppies are ready to wean at 6-7 weeks of age. Of course the mommies get to go outside and potty several times a day. Once the puppies are weaned they are put in a penned area that has vinyl flooring. I find that vinyl flooring is easy to keep sanitized. In this pen is where we put the puppies carrier, food, toys, chew bones and tray with papers. This gives the puppies lots of area to play and socialize. The pens are set up in my home where there is lots of action and interaction with me and my family. All puppies are paper trained before leaving to their new homes.
