My Champion Boomer in the Pure Paws booth at one of the big dog show. We only use Pure paws on our Maltese. Pure Paws is in 64 countries and used on the top winning champions around the world.
New product called H2O by Pure Paws is a revolutionary hydrating line of product that I am now using on my Maltese. I highly recommend the H2O line for coats that mat easily, coats that need shine and a silkiness feel and coats that you are trying to grow for show. Order at: www.purepawsusa.com
Below are the steps I take in bathing my Maltese. Pure Paws shampoos and conditioners are concentrated and can be diluted 8 parts water to1 part shampoo depending on coat. I like to dilute my shampoos back 6 parts water to 1 part shampoo. The hydrating conditioner I like a 50/50 ratio. I mix my product in an empty tint bottle you can purchase at any beauty supply house. Place a non slip mat on the bottom of your kitchen sink and use your sprayer to rinse.
Wet coat and lather first shampooing with Pure Paws Brightening Shampoo, rinse well. This works as a clarifying shampoo.
2nd lather with H2O hydrating shampoo, rinse well
Apply H2O conditioner throughout the coat. I then put my Maltese on my grooming table and work through the coat while the conditioner is on with a tool called a wood rake. This is a tool that has two rows of teeth that come into a V shape. The teeth are long and wide apart which helps me work through the coat and any mats. If you run across a mat separate it with your fingers first then comb through with either a wood rake or a wide toothed metal comb. Use a smaller comb on the face to ensure you do not poke the eyes.
Rinse the entire coat, leaving some conditioner in the coat.
Towel blot well.
Take either your wide toothed metal comb or wood rake and again comb through the entire coat.
Use a pin brush, not the metal brushes with the balls on the tips and blow the coat in the direction it lays on a med setting. Keep the dryer 10-12 inches away from the skin. I have purchased several pin brushes over the years and the pin brush Pure Paws has created is by far my favorite. The brush has brass pins that are nickel coated so that they do not get hot when blow drying. The pins have polished tips so they do not scratch. This makes brushing and grooming much more pleasurable for your pet. It also glides through the coat easier which makes brushing and grooming easier for you.
When coat is partially dry, take your H2O mist and spray a little around the entire coat, very little on puppy’s coats more on long or adult coats. Continue to blow dry.
Once coat is completely dry if you are grooming a long coat or adult coat you can spray mist the coat once more, brush and blow for another few seconds.
Use your H2O mist as needed during brushings during the week. It will keep the coat hydrated, silky feeling, shiny and much easier to brush and comb in between baths.
If you are going to keep your Maltese in a puppy cut using the brightening shampoo followed by Moisturizing conditioner will make the hair fluffier and then spray with some ultra shine, H2O conditioner gives a silkier look. If you need to whiten the coat, Pure Paws No Rinse shampoo has optical brighteners that do a wonderful job. This shampoo is called No Rinse but on the Maltese you have to rinse it out and follow with either moisturizing conditioner or H2O conditioner. I really like to use the No rinse shampoo on the face every time I bathe my Maltese and once a month on the rest of the coat.
